Book publishing glossary

The terms below cover the full lifecycle of a book — from the earliest creative spark to post-launch marketing. Each entry links to the services we offer around that concept.

Developmental editing

A deep structural review of your manuscript that examines plot arcs, character development, pacing, argument logic, and chapter organisation. Unlike line editing, developmental editing addresses the architecture of the book itself. Our developmental editors work with fiction and non-fiction across all major genres and provide a detailed editorial letter alongside tracked changes.

Copyediting

Sentence-level editing for grammar, syntax, consistency, and style. Copyediting ensures your prose reads cleanly while preserving your unique voice. We follow the Chicago Manual of Style by default but can adapt to any house style or academic standard your project requires.

"The copyedit caught inconsistencies I'd missed across 14 drafts." — R. Okonkwo, non-fiction author

Proofreading

The final quality gate before publication. Proofreading catches typographical errors, formatting glitches, and residual inconsistencies in a near-final layout. We proof against both digital and print-ready files to ensure your book looks flawless in every format.

Typesetting and interior layout

Translating a manuscript file into a professionally formatted book interior. This includes font selection, margin calibration, running headers, drop caps, image placement, and table formatting. Our typesetters produce InDesign files, press-ready PDFs, and reflowable ePub layouts simultaneously.

Cover design

Your cover is the single most important marketing asset your book will ever have. We create original cover concepts grounded in genre conventions and market research, then refine through collaborative revision rounds. Deliverables include front cover, full wrap with spine, and digital thumbnail variants optimised for online retail.

ISBN and metadata

Every commercially distributed book needs an International Standard Book Number and accurate metadata — title, subtitle, contributors, BISAC categories, keywords, and description. We handle ISBN procurement through the Canadian ISBN Agency and structure your metadata for maximum discoverability on Amazon, Indigo, Kobo, and library catalogues.

Print-on-demand setup

Print-on-demand eliminates upfront inventory risk by printing each copy as it is ordered. We configure your files for IngramSpark, KDP Print, and other POD platforms, ensuring correct bleed, trim size, colour profiles, and barcode placement.

"Zero rejected files on the first upload — that never happens." — T. Arsenault, self-publishing author

E-book conversion

Converting your manuscript into ePub 3 and Kindle formats with proper reflowable text, embedded fonts, linked table of contents, and accessibility markup. We test on over a dozen devices and reading apps before delivery.

Ghostwriting

When you have the expertise and the story but need a skilled writer to bring it to life, our ghostwriters collaborate closely with you through interviews, outlines, and iterative drafts. Every project begins with a detailed brief and voice-matching exercise so the finished manuscript sounds authentically yours.

Book marketing strategy

Publication day is only the beginning. We develop launch plans that include pre-order campaigns, review outreach, social media content calendars, Amazon advertising setup, and local bookstore pitch kits tailored to the Canadian market and beyond.

Why manuscript quality determines everything

The difference between a book that finds its audience and one that disappears into obscurity almost always comes down to editorial quality. Readers forgive an imperfect cover far more readily than they forgive clumsy prose, structural confusion, or factual errors.

Our editorial team includes former acquisitions editors from major Canadian publishing houses, freelance editors with decades of genre fiction experience, and academic specialists who understand the rigour required for scholarly and professional non-fiction.

Every manuscript we accept goes through a tailored editorial plan — never a one-size-fits-all checklist. We evaluate your draft's specific needs, recommend the appropriate level of editing, and provide transparent timelines and pricing before any work begins.

What authors are saying

"I came in with a rough idea and left with a professionally published memoir. The developmental editor challenged me to dig deeper and the result was a book I'm genuinely proud of."

Hélène Fournier, memoir author

"The cover design process was collaborative and surprisingly fast. They understood the thriller genre and delivered a cover that immediately signals suspense on the shelf."

Marcus Delgado, thriller novelist

"Setting up distribution felt overwhelming until this team walked me through every retailer, every metadata field, and every pricing decision. My book was live in three countries within two weeks."

Priya Nair, business non-fiction author

Is this the right fit for your project?

We work best with authors who share these characteristics. If several of these describe you, we should talk.

  • You have a completed or in-progress manuscript of at least 20,000 words
  • You want professional-grade editing, not just a grammar check
  • You are self-publishing or hybrid-publishing and need production support
  • You value transparent timelines and clear communication throughout the process
  • You are looking for a long-term publishing partner, not a one-off vendor
  • You are open to honest editorial feedback that strengthens your work

Common questions from authors

How long does the full book production process take?
Timelines vary by manuscript length and the services involved. A typical project — editing through to distribution setup — takes between three and six months. We provide a detailed schedule during the initial assessment so you know exactly what to expect at every milestone.
Do you work with first-time authors?
Absolutely. A significant portion of our clients are first-time authors. We guide you through every decision — from choosing the right trim size to understanding royalty structures — so the process feels manageable rather than overwhelming.
Can I hire you for just one service, like cover design?
Yes. While many authors engage us for the full journey, every service is available individually. You might only need a proofread, or you might want us to handle e-book conversion alone. We will scope the project to match exactly what you need.
What genres and formats do you support?
We work across literary fiction, genre fiction (thriller, romance, science fiction, fantasy, mystery), memoir, business non-fiction, self-help, academic texts, children's books, and poetry collections. Formats include paperback, hardcover, e-book, and audiobook-ready manuscripts.
